Notes from Your Farm: Harvest, Pests, & Distribution Opening

Hello from the Farm,

An update about last weeks incident when Small Farm Central was hacked. No ones personal information or payment information was reached by the hackers.  All shareholder information is safe.

Our Second Harvest week is here!  We are extremely excited to get in the routine of harvesting on Thursdays and Fridays.  As you will see the vegetables from this week are similar to last week.  There will be Asian Greens that will spice up any salad, with some freshly cut Lettuce heads, and some Kale that could make a nutritious smoothie!

What Happened on the Farm this Week?
Weeds have been getting a bit out of control.  Organically removing weeds at a low cost price means mechanically or physically removing the weeds.  The trainees and farm help has been hoeing cut lettuce, dill, and beets.  They are the newly planted vegetables that need the extra help until they become big enough.

The Colorado Potato Beetle has made their appearance on our potatoes and eggplant.  This beetle at the larvae stage can do great damage to the leaves of plants.  They will eat the leaf down to the midrib.  We have been physically removing these pests from the plants. Let us know what you have done in your own gardens.

Cheese Share
Hillacres Pride is again offering their popular cheese share at Homefields. With the CSA you will get 11 deliveries (every other week) of 2 cheeses each.  You will get to sample and enjoy 22 different cheeses throughout the season.  These will include cheddars and colbys (some flavored), fresh mozzarella, artisan cheeses, ricotta, quark, fresh cheese spreads, and feta-just to name a few.

The hard cheeses are all vacuum sealed and most of the soft cheeses freeze well.  The cheese is made from the milk of our Jersey cows, a milk that is high in protein and perfect for making cheese.  It naturally contains beta-carotene and in the summer the cows graze on our lush pastures and they naturally have a yellow tint to their milk.

Harvest List
Asian Greens - Can be used in a stir fry by adding chiles, garlic, peanut oil, and possibly adding some salt. Also, the greens could simply make a yummy salad.

Kale - Kale chips are delicious and easily done.  Just put some olive oil and salt on the raw kale.  Next they will stay in the oven on a cookie sheet until the edges are brown.  They can also be made into a smoothie.

Lettuce Heads - Made into a salad or put into a sandwich.

Bok Choy - this Asian green can be sauteed by adding ginger, red pepper, and garlic.  A healthy side dish!

Collards - can be cooked down and used in many recipes.  Use it as a wrap instead of a tortilla.

Rhubarb - make it into a sauce or a pie.

Swiss Chard - used as a side dish by being sauteed, made into a soup, or a pasta.

Cutting Lettuce - salads, sandwiches, steamed dishes, or soups

Cilantro - use in baking, curry, or soup

Notes from Your Farm: Rainy Days & the Orange Cat

Hello from the Farm,

Last week was extremely rainy and filled with indoor work.  It gave us time to really pay attention to our greenhouse plants.  In greenhouse 2 we transplanted tomatoes so they could be our early and late tomato crop. Soon we will be planting our hot corps in the fields!

We are past Mothers Day, which also means we are in the Frost Free Zone. It is the average time that we look at to plant our warm crops outside.   Gardner's and Farmers are starting to plant their summer crops in the field for early yields.  The Frost Free Zone does not always hold true because a light frost could occur at night this time of year.

Our Rainy Day Findings...
A coffee table donated by Millersville students (but actually we found it in a pile of furniture the students were throwing away) that we are ready to transform into a kids table!

Law Reh began the transformation by sanding off the student graffiti. Sanding also gave it a fresh smooth surface.  Next we will apply chalkboard paint to the surface and paint the legs a vibrant color. Maybe even add a vegetable design...Stay tuned to see how the table turns out!

Our Four Legged Visitor
Our game camera caught this cat snooping around the treeline of the farm.  We think this orange cat is living in the Owl Boxes 20ft. up in the trees along the farm perimeter.  The cat also sneaked into the barn one day we had the doors propped open.

Trainees have been pruning and mulching since they have started back at the farm.

Notes from Your Farm: 2016 Shares, Flyers, & Trainees

Hello from the Farm,

Many events have been happening on the farm these past couple of weeks. Elizabeth has been seeding in the greenhouse since the beginning of the month.  Some of the plants have even started to make an appearance!  We are hoping that the weather will stay nice so we can start breaking the soil for transplants and direct seeding.  The 2016 Season has started! This is a great time to sign up for your share or tell others to join our CSA. Just follow the link below the 2016 Farm Shares title.

Do you see the little Kale leaves?

If you are roaming around Lancaster City and Millersville area keep an eye out for our flyers!  We have been hanging them around the local area to attract new shareholders and to educate the public about our mission.  Let us know if you would want to pick up flyers and distribute them yourself.

There was a trainee field day at the farm two weeks ago.  Majority of the trainees have not worked on the farm.  Their experience was filled with planting their own seeds in the greenhouse, a tour of the farm, watching a movie about farming, and picture opportunities by the gator and tractor even happened!

Everyone by the tractor!

Notes from Your Farm: Spread the Word

Hello from the Farm,

Now is the time to get the word out about our Farm!  It would be great to let more people know in the local area what this Farm is doing and how it is helping the community.  Please share this Blog post to friends and family that might be interested in what we do here at the Farm.

Information about Goodwill at Homefields Farm

When you buy a share at our Farm you directly support the people with disabilities that we train and employ. They develop horticultural skills on the farm and enjoy the outcome of their own labor.  Learning these skills might help them find competitive work within their local community.

We are an Organic CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) in Millersville, PA.  Growing various types of vegetables and fruits that you will pick up on a weekly basis starting in June and ending in November.  While you pick up your vegetables there is a Pick-Your-Own Field for shareholders to harvest at their choosing. Our Farm wants our shareholders to come pickup their vegetables at the farm because they will have a full understanding of where their food comes from, how it is grown, and who is growing their food.  The Farm is for shareholders to help the community, understand where their produce comes from, and having a better connection with the environment they live in.
