Notes from Your Farm: Open House Event

Hello from the Farm,

This spring air is making your Farmers very anxious to be in the fields.  We're hoping the fields will be dry enough next week so we can start tilling and planting seeds. Also hoping for beautiful spring weather the weekend of April 7th & 8th.  Our Farm Weekend will be in full swing those dates and we want to see our shareholders!

Farm Weekend!

First Friday in Lancaster City (4/7):
Your Farmers will be located in front of Mio Studio celebrating the beginning of Spring by handing out fliers and FREE lettuce plants!  Come see us at 154 N. Prince St. Mio Studio makes sculptural jewelry out of recycled hardwood and metal.

Open House (4/8):
11:00am till 1:00pm - Here at the Farm: 150 Letort Road, Millersville - Free & Open to the Public

Prepare to get dirty! We will be kicking off the day by having snacks and refreshments with your Farmers, then we will be having a planting workshop for our shareholders (if you bring someone who is not a shareholder they can do the planting workshop by giving a small donation), hands on kid activities, and will be winding down with a relaxing tour of the farm. This is a great time to explore the farm while bringing friends and family. Come join us rain or shine!

Planning on coming or have questions, please call the Farm Manager Taryn Hogeland at (717)871-3110 or email thogeland@yourgoodwill.org

Glimpse into the 2017 Season...
Our greenhouse is very green and happy!  Our fall crops are growing and are soon ready to be moved into greenhouse 2 (GH2).  GH2 is not heated and we are able to lift the sides so there is more air flow.  It lets the plants get use to the air temperature outside slowly, so they are not stressed out by the change when we plant them in the fields.

The very early experimental planting that was done in February of cabbage and broccoli got some cold damage.  They were placed in GH2 and the temperatures got lower than expected three weekends ago.  Meaning we lost a good amount of the experimental planting and were only able to save a few.  No worries though!  We are still on schedule for cabbage and broccoli with the 2nd planting we did in the beginning of March, which is the normal time we plant these crops.

Trainees are back at the farm on Mondays and Wednesdays!  They are very excited to be outside and working in the greenhouse.  All were enjoying the growth in the greenhouse :)

Fruit Share
Would you like to pick up a CSA Fruit Share when you come to get your CSA vegetables? It’s time to sign up now with North Star Orchard for their weekly Fruit Share, which is available for pickup for 15 weeks starting in August.

CSA Members have been enjoying the Fruit Share for years, and we encourage you to take a look at what the share has to offer here.

This is not ordinary fruit, but unique and heritage varieties which are full of flavor: plums with pizazz, perfect peaches, amazing Asian pears, great (seedless) grapes, astounding apples, and a sprinkling of heritage pear varieties.

Sign up directly with North Star on their website (link again to https://northstarorchard.com/fruit-share ), or if you need to reach them directly, email Lisa@northstarorchard.com
